Vertical Platform Lifts
Typically Used to Give someone Access from the Ground to the Level of the Building to which They Need Access
Vertical Platform Lifts, or VPLs, could be either the first or second floor. There are both residential and commercial versions available, with the latter having more-strict requirements for code compliance. VPLs can be a great alternative to a ramp because they take up far less space and are typically more convenient for the user(s). Whether seated in a chair, scooter, or even standing, this “outdoor elevator” can be used within a garage or outside to gain access to a porch or deck without affecting too much of the area that a long ramp would require.
HomeBase Solutions offers high quality VPLs at a very good value. We always recommend products we would use for our own loved ones, so you can rest assured that you will be guided into something that suits your needs and budget. Our clients are often surprised to learn that a VPL can be less expensive and last far longer than many “custom” wood ramp solutions.
Unless you have a commercial use for the lift, oftentimes a permit is not even needed for a VPL. Our assessment will include ensuring that everything is needed to be ready for our installation of the lift. A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) outlet is required nearby. If a contractor is already involved with your home modification project, we can work with them to help streamline the process to ensure your satisfaction.

The picture above shows one of our installations of a VPL. This particular product has a built-in battery backup. Whether built-in or added, we highly recommend battery backup to ensure egress during power outages. The last thing you want is to be caught without a way in or out of your home!
The picture to the left shows a VPL from the same side at its top position. Like many, this model relies on the ramp that automatically raises and closes to ensure the passenger remains in the lift while riding up and down.
This photo of the same project shows the VPL at its top landing. The interlock gate on this model is mechanical and will only open when the lift is completely up at its top position. The safety of having an interlock gate helps ensure that no one is able to have access to the lift unless it is completely up and able to take the load.
Other models, as seen at the top and bottom of this page, can have an electro-mechanically-controlled interlock gate and doors. This makes for a vastly safer way for a ambulatory client to ride up and down, as an 8- or 18-inch ramp does a great job of stopping a wheelchair from toppling over, but not a person.
